I am a board member at the Tarkio Nutrition Center (officially known as the Atchison County Multi-Purpose Center) in Tarkio, MO. According to the information recently presented to the administrator, our meal reimbursement funding will be reduced by 75% once funding is restored (after the shutdown ends). It sounds as if this reduction of benefits is indefinite.
Is this true, and, if so, does the funding reduction have something to do with action(s) taken by the USDA/federal government/administration?

Mr. Hawkins, thank you for your concern. You are partially correct. The 75% reduction in meal reimbursement took effect on November 1 and, at this time, does not have a set end date. We are hopeful that once the government shutdown ends and we receive funding—which can take up to 8 weeks or longer—we will be able to return to the original contracted amounts. However, until that funding is received, we cannot make any guarantees.

To answer your second question, yes, the reduction in reimbursement to the senior centers is directly due to the government shutdown, as we are not currently receiving federal reimbursements.

We at Young at Heart Resources have made many cuts, including furloughing staff and placing employees on part-time schedules, in order to help manage the financial situation and continue supporting the centers as best we can.
Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time
