❀️ Celebrating the Heart of Our Communities

September is Senior Center Month, and it’s the perfect time to recognize the incredible role senior centers play in communities throughout Northwest Missouriβ€”and to help everyone better understand how senior centers and Young at Heart Resources (YAHR) work together to serve older adults.

When many people hear the words β€œsenior center,” they may think of a place where older adults go for lunch.

But today’s senior centers are SO much more than a meal! πŸ₯—❀️

Senior centers are places for:

🍎 Nutritious meals
🀝 Social connection & friendship
πŸ™‹ Volunteer opportunities
πŸ“š Education & learning
🎨 Activities & recreation
🏘️ Community involvement
πŸ’‘ Information, assistance & resources
❀️ Support that helps older adults remain independent

HOW THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT SUPPORTS OUR COMMUNITIES

For more than 50 years, the Older Americans Act (OAA) has helped older adults remain healthy, independent, and connected to their communities.

OAA funding supports services for adults age 60 and older, family caregivers, and other eligible individuals. These services may include:

🍽️ Congregate & home-delivered meals
🚐 Transportation
🏠 In-home services
❀️ Caregiver support
πŸ“ž Information & assistance
πŸ’ͺ Health & wellness programs
βš–οΈ Legal assistance
…and other community-based supports.

OAA funding is administered through a nationwide aging network that includes the federal government, State Units on Aging, and local Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs).

πŸ’™ HOW YOUNG AT HEART RESOURCES & SENIOR CENTERS WORK TOGETHER

Young at Heart Resources is the Area Agency on Aging serving 18 counties in Northwest Missouri.

YAHR is responsible for planning, coordinating, administering, and monitoring Older Americans Act programs and services throughout our service area.

But YAHR does not provide all of these services directly.

Instead, we partner with local organizationsβ€”including senior centers and other community providersβ€”to deliver many services right where older adults live.

Through contracts with YAHR, participating senior centers may provide:

🍽️ Congregate meals
🏑 Home-delivered meals
πŸ“š Nutrition education
πŸ“£ Outreach
…and other approved services.

This partnership helps keep services local, while providing the oversight needed to ensure public funds are used appropriately and programs meet state and federal requirements.

🏠 SENIOR CENTERS MAKE IT HAPPEN LOCALLY!

While YAHR helps provide funding and oversight, local senior centers are the ones making many of these services happen every day.

Senior centers know their communities. They know the people they serve. They coordinate meals, recruit volunteers, raise funds, organize activities, and build relationships that go far beyond providing a meal.

It’s also important to understand that funding received through YAHR generally does not cover the entire cost of operating a senior center or providing its services.

Senior centers depend on:

πŸ’° Local contributions
🎟️ Fundraising
🀲 Grants & donations
πŸ™‹ Volunteers
❀️ Community support

That’s one reason Senior Center Month is such a great opportunity to support your local center!

🍽️ YOU CAN JOIN THEM FOR A MEAL!

Did you know that senior center meals aren’t necessarily limited to older adults receiving services through the Older Americans Act?

Individuals who are not eligible for an OAA-funded meal may still be able to enjoy a meal at their local senior center by paying the established cost of the meal.

And these aren’t just β€œsenior meals.” πŸ˜‰

Senior centers provide nutritious, well-balancedβ€”and yes, TASTYβ€”meals! πŸ˜‹

Having lunch at your local senior center is also a great opportunity to:

πŸ‘‹ Meet your neighbors
πŸ’¬ Enjoy conversation
πŸ“… Learn what’s happening in your community
πŸŽ‰ Participate in activities
πŸ’‘ Discover what your senior center has to offer

And when you purchase a meal at your local senior center, you are helping support an organization that works every day to serve older adults in your community.

❀️ MORE THAN A MEAL

For an older adult who lives alone, lunch at the senior center can mean friendship and connection.

For someone who is homebound, a home-delivered meal can provide important nutrition and regular contact with another person.

And sometimes, a meal is the beginning of something more.

An older adult who first connects with a senior center or YAHR for nutrition services may discover additional resources that can help with:

🚐 Transportation
❀️ Caregiver support
🏠 In-home services
πŸ’° Benefits
πŸ“ž Other community resources

That’s why senior centers truly are more than a place to eat.

πŸŽ‰ CELEBRATE SENIOR CENTER MONTH WITH US!
